Success.  Protection from magistrates.

Quite frankly, a magistrate is an authorized individual that works under a Judge's discretion to ultimately make decisions on behalf of that Judge.  A Judge is an elected official.  That's why if a Judge decides that a magistrate's decision is not in line with his/her views or values that judge can invalidate the magistrate's decision.

Judges are elected officials and that's what gives them such power, because the people 

Unless, we are talking about the SCOTUS where the President nominates someone and they have to be confirmed.  More on this another time...

STORY TIME
In Cleveland there was this renoun, influential female attorney who misused client IOLTA fund accounts and was disbarred from practicing law.  An IOLTA fund is basically like a fund that holds client funds that have not yet been earned by the attorney.  Anyway, this attorney who was disbarred ended up getting everything (plus some) back and becoming a Magistrate at a Juvenile Court - a higher career position than she had previously.
