The sixty-first demon of the Goetia, Zagan is said to manifest like a bull with gryphon's wings. In Scot's Discoverie of Witchcraft, he is accorded the dual titles of king and President. In addition to holding dominion over thirty-three legions of lesser spirits, he reputedly has the power of transformation. He can turn water into wine or wine into blood. In addition, he can turn a fool into a wise man and transform any metal into a valuable coin. In his Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, Wierus gives his name as Zagam. In the Goetia of Dr. Rudd, he is said to rule over thirty-six legions of lesser spirits. Umabel is the name of the angel that frustrates him. Under the name of Zagam, he appears in the Liber de Angelis. In this text, he is portrayed as a dark spirit conjured at the crossroads at night. He is invoked in the course of a love spell. This is no sweet and delicate spell of amorous love, however. Zagam is tied to a spell of compulsion, intended to rob the will of a woman until she submits to the false passion. According to the text, if a crossroads cannot be easily found, Zagam can instead be summoned in a location where thieves are regularly executed. At this lonely and haunted place, three doves are sacrificed in the name of this demon. Zagam, thus propitiated, will come and leave a symbol or figure in the dust where the working took place. This sign can then be used to compel the love of any woman, forcing her to experience an inextinguishable passion. See also Goetia, Rudd, Scot, Wierus.
THE DICTIONARY OF DEMONS, REVISED AND EXPANDED, M. BELANGER (2021)
ZAGAN is the Sixty-first Spirit who is a Great King and President. He appears as a Bull with Wings but will appear at the request of the magician as a man. He instructs men on wit and intellect, how to make associations within their own natural environment and how to quietly listen and think/comprehend before speaking. This spirit also transforms Wine into Water and Blood into Wine, being a Vampyric shade which initiates into the mysteries of immortality and blood. He also instructs initiation into evolution and strengthening the self, that one may pass the requirements of a human body upon death - while this is not proved. Zagan makes "fools wise", which holds a key to the Tarot - those who walk the fearful path, face the dangers of the mind and soul, may emerge as Adepts in the Art of Sorcery. He governs 33 Legions of Spirits.
